Amapiano
This episode showcases Khaka Yena popularly known as Gaba Cannal who had a significant role & contribution in birthing one of the biggest music genres known in the world today as AmaPiano. Born and bred in the East of Johannesburg, Gaba Cannal had a vision as a pioneer to set up his record label, Gaba Cannal Music, a move uncommon to the AmaPiano fraternity at the time. This made him one of the first official labels in the Amapiano industry, signing producers like De Mthuda, Kwiish SA, Da Muziqal Chef, El’kaydee and Xavi Yentin to name a few, not forgetting frequent collaborator & fellow pioneer, Master Jay. If these lyrics: “Heala, heala, nhliziyo yam...” resonate with you personally, it means you’re familiar with - the Godfather of Amapiano. Before the log drum was even introduced to the genre, Gaba was at the forefront of the new wave of AmaPiano Artists. Coming from a background of house records and gospel music, Gaba fused these elements to create a unique soulful musical experience, synonymous to his personal sound as heard on this beautifully curated AmaPiano Forecast mix. Fast forward to over a decade later, Gaba’s music is loved all over South Africa, with his fan base spilling into neighbouring countries like Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia to name a few.
