India's hopes of posting a 300-plus total received an enormous boost from their explosive opening partnership. Virender Sehwag was particularly destructive from the very beginning. Batting at his trademark attacking tempo, Sehwag smashed 52 runs from just 39 balls, including nine boundaries and a six. The West Indies struggled to contain India's aggressive opening pair as Sehwag and captain Sourav Ganguly quickly pushed the scoring rate upwards. Sehwag eventually fell with India's score on 88, but the responsibility immediately shifted to Ganguly. The Indian captain continued the assault and scored a valuable 53. In the process, Ganguly reached the 50th half-century of his prolific ODI career, adding another landmark to an already remarkable limited-overs record. Ganguly looked set to continue his destructive innings, but his stay at the crease ended when he was bowled while attempting to cut a straight delivery from Carl Hooper. The dismissal brought an end to another spectacular contribution from India's captain, but the explosive opening provided India with the platform they needed for a huge total. This was the era of Sehwag's fearless strokeplay and Ganguly's aggressive captaincy — a period that produced some of the most entertaining Indian ODI cricket.
